44 years ago today, the expansion New Orleans Saints played their first regular-season game against the visiting Los Angeles Rams. On the first play, Saints receiver John Gilliam returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, but New Orleans could only manage two more field goals the rest of the way en route to a 27-13 loss and a 3-11 record in its inaugural year.
